About Dental Hygiene

Visiting the hygienist is recommended for almost every adult patient. Although the average patient should visit the hygienist every 6 months, depending on the individual and their individual needs, the appropriate hygiene recall can be anywhere between every 3 months to once every 12 months.Even for children, hygiene appointments are a great way to keep the gums healthy and the teeth looking clean.

Excellent oral hygiene is essential for the health of the teeth and the gums. It is estimated over 95% of the general public has some form of gum disease. Effective hygiene at home and regularly cleaning with our dental hygienists is important to reduce the chance of developing infections, gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath. Our excellent team of experienced Dental Hygienists at Arch Dental Care are here to help.

Why You may need a Hygiene appointment?

  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums
  • Red gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Gum recession (exposed tooth root)
  • Early tooth loss
  • Signs and symptoms of gum disease (known as Periodontitis):

Periodontal disease, often referred to simply as gum disease, has a strong family or hereditary element to it. If you have a family with receding gums, red gums, bleeding gums or loose teeth, you as a patient could also be at risk. You may wish to speak to your dentist first or feel free to arrange a hygiene appointment directly yourself by calling the reception team at the practice.

All hygiene appointments with our hygienists will include the following things:

  • A soft and gentle clean of all the teeth and gums including full plaque and tartar removal.
  • Remove of tough, hard to get of stains (like those from tea, coffee, wine and smoking)
  • Management of bleeding and red gums
  • Discuss oral hygiene techniques and tools most appropriate for you as an individual to do at home so you can maintain excellent oral hygiene at home.
  • A plan between you and the hygienist about when to come back for the next appointments for follow-up and maintenence.

It is important to bear in mind that gum disease is primarily treated by the patient at home. The hygienist is there to guide you how to better clean the teeth in areas you may be missing and they will of course remove all the plaque and tartar. However, effective home cleaning is the key for long term oral health and this will be discussed in detail by your hygienist in the appointment.

How to book an appointment with the hygienist?

You can book an appointment with us simply by giving us a call and requesting a hygienist appointment. You will definitely feel a lot better in yourself, and your confidence is likely to grow, once you are in a good routine and are more comfortable with your oral hygiene.
